17, Bretherton Road, Prescot Private 265584, 1/12th Bn., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment Thomas was born in Prescot in 1897, the eldest son of Thomas and Alice Henry. The 1911 census listed Thomas at the above address, where he was a 13 year old Scholar.
He enlisted to the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment in St Helens on 22nd September 1915. After training, he went to France on 21st June 1916, and then on 14th February 1917 he went to Salonika. While there he received a Mention in Dispatches, London Gazette dated 28th November 1917 (as shown below)

Thomas was discharged from the army on 21st March 1919. He was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory medal, which he received in March 1922. Shortly after this, he re-enlisted into the Royal Corps of Signals. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1924 and remained in the army (as a Territorial) until June 1937, although there appears to have been some confusion at the Army Records Office over when his term of service should expire.
At the time of the 1939 National Register, Thomas was living at Halsnead Park with his wife, Queenie
