5, Brook Street, Whiston Private 42625, 7th Bn., Royal Iniskiilling Fusiliers 36 year old Collier Joseph Hayes attested for military service in St Helens on 11th May 1915. He listed his wife, Alice, of the same address as his next of kin, also recording children Samuel (20/08/1903), Rachel (07/02/1906) and David (13/10/1910) as his children.
He was transferred to the 4th Bn on 13th November 1915 after e medical resulted in his classification as fit for light service on Home duties, and then on 31st January 1916 he was again transferred, this time to the 1st Garrison Battalion of the Royal Irish Rifles.
On 11th August 1916, it was reported that he was unable to read without glasses and he was further downgraded. He was then assigned to prisoner of War duties, escorting prisoners.
Joseph was demobilised on 17th June 1920, and at that time his address was recorded as 7 Parkers Court, Prescot. He was entitled to the British War Medal
In the 1939 National Register, Joseph and his wife Alice lived at 39, Kingsway, Prescot.
