William RUTTER

Prescot (Street Address not known)

Gunner 33522, Royal Field Artillery

18 year old William worked as a Coal Miner when he attested for military service in Newcastle on 1st September 1914. He had been born in Whiston but by 1901, the family had relocated to Ashfield, Nottinghamshire.

It would appear that William's mother had died and his father, Thomas, moved the family to be with his own father, William Rutter.

After only three weeks military service, he was discharged as ne was medically unfit and 'not likely to become an efficient soldier'. This was due to having poor vision in both eyes.
