17 Carlton Street, Prescot Corporal 2139, 1/5th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment Alfred was born in Huyton around 1893, the son of Sarah Harrison. Sarah was widowed and married Ellis Dutton, moving to the above address in Carlton Street, Prescot. At the time of the 1911 census, Alfred was 18 years old and working at the Wire Works as a Copper Wire Winder.
He joined the 5th Battalion of the South Lancashire Regiment, presumably on the outbreak of war, and went to France with them on 13th February 1915.
The picture below, taken from an undated copy of the Prescot Reporter, shows Alfred, probably while the Battalion were training in the UK. Alfred is not specifically identified, and the caption reads, "Rifleman Alfred Harrison(23), of the 5th South Lancs. Regiment, who is shown in the above group, lived at 17 Carlton Street, Prescot, is at present in one of the base hospitals, suffering from the effects of the fumes of the asphyxiating gas and injuries to his back"
In the Territorial Force renumbering of 1917, Alfred was given the new number of 240438
He was disembodied on 4th March 1919 and was entitled to the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
