Born on 12st September 1894 in Hawarden, Flint, Gareth Davies was the son of Arthur and Elizabeth Davies. The family moved to Prescot around 1903.

He joined the Royal Navy on 13th October 1913, signing on for five years. On the outbreak of war in August 1914, he was serving aboard the Marlboro but in 1915 was transferred to HMS Marksman. Launched in 1915, Marksman was involved in the Battle of Jutland in 1916 and it is thought that the article and letter shown below was written after that battle.

The Prescot Reporter carried the following article.
"Another of the local men who took part in the battle is missing, though possibly he is safe. He was on board the Marksman, and it is thought she is one of the two boats which are known to be missing after the great sea fight. Davies, who is only 21 years of age, is the son of Mr Davies, one of Prescot's best known joiners and builders, who lives at 6, Warrington Road, and it is hoped that he will shortly receive the welcome intelligence that his son is safe.

Mr Davies has now received the following undated letter from his son.
'My dear Mother and Father, I'm alive and still kicking. I suppose by now you have received the news that we were in action. I have got a bit of German shell, which I will send in the course of a few days. Don't worry, I am quite well. Give my fondest live to all at home. Your affectionate son, G.W.D.'

Garth Davies served until 3rd March 1919, when he was demobilised.

It would seem that he migrated to New Zealand in the 1920's and died in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1955 at the age of 61.
