Richard Sumner DANIELS

38, Rowson Street, Prescot

Private 2843, 1.5th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment

Richard Daniels was born in St Helens in 1894. At the time of the 1911 census, he was living at the above address, which was the home of his uncle, James Jones, and Aunt Hannah. At that time, Richard was 16 and working at the Wire Works as a 'Worker on Brass Drilling Machine'. He attested for military service in Prescot on 15th September 1914, stating that he was 20 years old and a Clock Maker.

His name was amongst the list of men 'serving the colours' printed in the Prescot Reporter in the summer of 1915

He was appointed Lance Corporal on 9th January 1916, and then sailed for France on 17th February 1917 and around this time he was renumbered to 240853. He was promoted to full Corporal on 1st September 1917. On 18th February 1918 he was transferred to the 2nd Field Survey Battalion, Royal Engineers, numbered 429766. This was due to his trade, enabling him to be employed as an Instrument Repairer.

Richard was demobilised on 25th September 1919 at Chatham, Kent. He was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

He died in Prescot just a few years later, in late 1922, at the age of 27.
