Ernest James FOGG


51 Derby Street, Prescot

4930, 1/5th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment

Ernest James Fogg was born in Prescot in 1877, the son of Harry Fogg who was the local School Attendance Officer.

Ernest was the Enumerator for the Prescot District in the 1911 census, at which time he lived at the above address with his father and four siblings. He recorded his occupation as Commercial Clerk for the County Council.

He attested for military service in St Helens in December 1915 but was only called up on 22nd March 1916 when he was posted to the 1/5th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment. However, after a few months he was transferred to the Herefordshire Regiment and then in July 1917 he again moved, this time to the Monmouthshire Regt. His last move was to the 19th Bn of the Queen's (Royal West Kent) Regiment in January 1918.

He eventually went to France on 5th May 1918.

Ernest was demobilised in February 1919 and returned to Prescot. He was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
