Born around 1886 in Blackpool, Edmund was a pre-War Territorial.
It would appear that in 1911, he married Ethel Taylor, whose parents lived in Scotchbarn Lane, Prescot.
He would have been called up for military service on the outbreak of war. He sailed from Avonmouth aboard the s.s. 'Royal Albert', leaving there in 28th July 1915. On the morning of 13th August, the ship was torpedoed by a German submarine and sank within six minutes. Figures for the number of casualties vary, but the figure of 935 is widely accepted.
Private Whiteside was one of the survivors, being picked up by another British ship, s.s. 'Soudan'.
He eventually arrived on the Gallipoli Peninsular on 19th August 1915. Nothing is known of his service after that date.

Edmund was disembodied on 15th July 1919. His service entitled him to the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
