26, Bretherton Road, Prescot Private 23387, King’s (Liverpool) Regiment William signed up for military service in Prescot on 25th May 1915. At that time, he was 37 years old, married, and working as a Coal Miner. He had married Harriett Edwards in Holywell in 1899 and they had children Hannah (1902), Mary (1904), Doris (1906) and George (1907).
He initially served with the 11th and 12th Battalions of the South Lancashire Regiment before transfer to the 25th Battalion of the King's (Liverpool) Regiment on 10th August 1917, then to the 27th Battalion on 23rd April 1918.
These were Labour Battalions, retained in the UK for essential war work.
He does not appear to have served overseas and therefore had no medal entitlement.
