Victoria Place, Prescot Pte 267712, 3rd Bn., South Lancashire Regiment In 1888 at Warrington, 19 year old John Conlin signed up for military service with the South Lancashire Regiment as Private 2606. He remained with the colours until March 1901, serving in Malta, Egypt, India and South Africa.
In the 1901 census, 33 year old John is listed as living at 8 Court, No 1, Victoria Place, Prescot. This was the home of his uncle, Thomas McIntyre. John recorded his occupation as 'Labourer'.
He married Margaret Hassett in Prescot in 1903 and when the 1911 census was taken, they were living at 1 Court, 3 House, Victoria Place. They had no children. John's occupation was listed as 'Forester's Labourer' on Lord Derby's estate.
On 11th September 1914, John Conlin re-enlisted at Warrington for military service. His records noted that he was qualified as a 'First Class Shot' in General Musketry.
Now aged 46, he remained with the 3rd Battalion in the UK until he was transferred to the Labour Corps on 30th June 1917. He was posted to an Agricultural Company.
He was transferred to the Class Z Reserve on 19th March 1919, having not served overseas.
He died in 1946, aged 76.
