17 East View, Prescot Pte M2/079621, Army Service Corps William was a 25 year old Electrician when he enlisted to the Army Service Corps on 21st April 1915. He gave his mother 'Mrs E Cleator', of the same address, as his next of kin.
He sailed from Southampton for France on 16th July 1915 aboard the s.s. 'Petersburg', arriving at Rouen the following day. He was classified as a Driver in the 3rd Army, and worked as an Ambulance Driver. In February 1916 he was transferred to the 251st Tunnelling Company of the Royal Engineers
William was demobilised on 12th February 1919 at Heaton Park. At this time he gave his address as 31, Gibraltar Street, Bolton. He was entitled to the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
The 1939 National register, shown below, recorded William living in Sutton and Cheam, where he was employed as a Plasterer
