17 Brook St, Whiston Private 3386, 5th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment The 1911 census listed 37 year old William Myers living with his wife, Jane, and children William (14), Margaret, Thomas, Fred, Lily, John and James in Brook Street, Whiston. William (Senior) was a Colliery Foreman and William (Junior) a Colliery Haulage Hand.
William (Junior) joined the South Lancs on 11th November 1914 in Prescot.
He was appointed to Lance Corporal then Acting Corporal in 1915, but reverted (by choice) to Rifleman on 12th January 1916. He was then transferred as Private 12434 with the 4th (Reserve) Battalion in November 1917 before being transferred to the Class W Reserve, and posted for work to Sutton heath and Lea Green Colliery on 5th July 1918.
He was finally discharged on 30th January 1919. He had not served overseas and therefore had no medal entitlement.
William rejoined the army on 29th January 1922, when he enlisted as Private 2557853 in the Royal Corps of Signals, a Territorial Unit.
He died in Prescot in 1971, aged 74.
