20 Queens Rd, Prescot Sapper 176664, Royal Engineers John Millett married Amelia Byron in Prescot on 8th November 1906. They had children Thomas (1907), John (1908) and George (1913). The 1911 census showed them living at 20, Queens Road.
John joined the army on 10th December 1915. He recorded that he was aged 35, married and worked as a Painter. He served as a Painter while in the army.
He remained in the UK until 27th April 1917, when he sailed from Devonport, bound for Mesopotamia aboard the ss 'Empress of India'. He eventually arrived in Basrah on 6th August 1917. He had a short spell in hospital the same month, suffering from fever, then contracted Malaria in October 1918.
On 8th March 1918, John's 9 year old son John died of Cerebral Meningitis at the family home.
John was demobilised on 11th May 1919. He was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal, receiving these in September 1921.
