William attested for military service in St Helens on 29th June 1915, stating that he ha previously served with the 5th Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment. His next of kin was his mother, Martha, of the same address.
He went to France on 4th May 1917. On 21st July that year, he was gassed, and after the war received a small pension for this. He remained in France until 8th August 1917, when he returned to the UK and remained there for the rest of the war.
William married Lena Pearson at Prescot on 26th January 1918 and their son Peter was born on 21st October that year.
William was promoted to Corporal on 5th November 1918.
He was transferred to the Class Z Army Reserve on 23rd February 1919, giving his home address as 9, Ward Street, Prescot. William was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal, and he received these in January 1922.
