56, Houghton Street, Prescot Private 181146, Machine Gun Corps Born in Prescot in 1891, by the time of the 1911 census, John and James Hunter, aged 22 and 20 respectively, lived at the above address. John was a Wire Drawer while James was a Carter for a Coal Merchant.
James was recorded as a 24 year old Laburer when he joined the South Lancashire Regiment on 8th December 1915 in Warrington. His brother John was listed as next of kin.
James was immediately posted to the Army Reserve and does not appear to have been mobilised until 15th October 1918, when he was posted to the Machine Gun Corps (Training Battalion). By this time, his address had changed to 10, Wood Street (off Sewell Street), Prescot. James did not see overseas service and was transferred to the Class Z Army Reserve on 12th February 1919.
He married Lucy Brown in Prescot in 1922, and they had son, also called James, in 1926.
James died in Prescot in 1970, aged 79.
