14, Rowson Street, Prescot Private 4968, 5th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment John was born on 1st December 1895 in Prescot.
The 1911 census showed John, aged 15, living at 14, Rowson Street with his 42 year old widowed mother Kate and 5 younger brothers. His occupation was recorded as 'Butcher's Assistant'.
Aged 20, and working as a Labourer at the Wire Works, he attested for military service on 7th December 1915. He was initially posted to the Reserve but was then mobilised on 28th March 1916 at St Helens. He listed his mother, Catherine, of the same address as his next of kin.
John was appointed Lance Corporal on 9th July 1916 then acting Corporal on 30th December that year. He remained in the UK until 23rd May 1917, when he sailed for France, at this time reverting to the rank of Private. By now, he had also been renumbered to 242302
On 13th July 1917, he was gassed and sent to 2/1 West Lancs Field Ambulance for treatment, returning to his unit on 28th.
He was included in a list of wounded soldiers published on 29th August 1917 (below)
He was again appointed Lance Corporal and then Lance Sergeant before reverting to Corporal once more on 3rd April 1919. Around this time, he was posted to the 2nd Ban of the Regiment but returned to the 5th in time for demobilisation at Prees Heath on 1st October 1919.
He was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal, receiving these on 15th February 1922.
John married Annie Appleton in Prescot in the summer of 1921. The 1939 National Register (below) listed the family at 8 St Helens Road, Prescot, with John recorded as an "Electrical Cable Record Keeper"
John died in St Helens in 1961, aged 65
