John MCDOWELL

19, Derby Street, Prescot

Private 4695, 5th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment

Later Private 242074

23 year old Bank Clerk John McDowell was mobilised on 18th February 1916 at St Helens. His next of kin was listed as his father, J McDowell, of The Towers, London Road, Norwich. Promoted to Lance Corporal on 12th January 1917, he appears to have been transferred to the 4th (Reserve) Battalion of the Regiment, with whom he served in Dublin before being transferred to Class P of the Army Reserve on 29th June 1918. This class of reservist was basically for those men who would be more use to the country in a civilian role, as opposed to military. Pte McDowell was sent to work at Parr's Bank in London.

He was demobilised on 30th January 1919. He had not seen overseas service and therefore did not have a medal entitlement.
