The 1911 census showed the Mannion family living at 29, Highfield Place, Prescot. Michael, the fourth son of Frank and Sarah Mannion, was then aged 14 and worked at the Wire Works as a Labourer in the Export Department.
Michael initially attested for military service on 7th December 1915 . He was immediately posted to the Army Reserve, remaining there until, aged 19, he was mobilised at Warrington on 27th February 1917. As a single man, his father Francis was listed as next of kin.
He went to France on 20th June 1917 and was transferred to the 13th Bn. of the Cheshire Regiment. On 12th April 1918, he suffered a Gun Shot Wound to the right leg, after which he was returned to the UK. He was treated at St Luke's War Hospital in Halifax.
Pte Mannion was discharged as being medically unfit on 28th October 1918. He was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal. In addition, his medical discharge earned him the Silver War Badge
