Born in Ballantrae, Ayrshire on 25th March 1873, James Tennant was listed in the Scottish Census for 1891 living with his parents, James (a Police Constable) and Agnes at 'Store Row' in Kilbirnie, Ayrshire. He was 18 years old and recorded his occupation as 'Mechanical Engineer's Apprentice'.
By the time of the 1901 Census, he had moved to Prescot and was living as a Boarder at 1, Houghton Street, the home of File Manufacturer James Blundell and his family. James Tennant was listed as a 29 year old Mechanical Engineer.
Sometime around 1902, he married his wife, Barbara. It is assumed that this took place in Scotland as she was a native of Aberdeenshire.
When the 1911 Census took place, James and Barbara lived at 10, Aspinall Street, Prescot. James was aged 38 and a Mechanical Engineer at the Electric Cable Factory, Barbara was 45 years old. They had been married for nine years but did not have any children.
The 1914 Army List showed James Tennant as a Lieutenant with the 5th Territorial Battalion, with a Seniority Date of 26th October 1911, and he was promoted to Captain on 14th November 1914.

He was appointed to the D.S.O. in the King's Birthday Honours List May 31st 1918, Gazette issue 30716 page 6460, when attached to the The Army Cyclists Corps.

Barbara Simpson Tennant died in Providence Hospital, St Helens, on 10th January 1945, aged 79. James died in Prescot on 22nd September 1958, aged 84
