2 Cross Street, Prescot Pte 3359, 5th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment John Hall was born in Prescot on 19th August 1893
He attested for military service in Prescot on 9th November 1914. Aged 23 and single, his next of kin was his father, William, of the same address.
He remained in the UK until sailing for France on 17th February 1917. Around the same timne, he was renumbered to Private 241170 in the Territorial Force Renumbering.
On 23rd April, he suffered a Gun Shot Wound to the upper lip, an injury that kept him in hospital until 1st May.
Pte Hall was included in an official list of wounded men , published on 7th August 1917
On 9th March 1918, he was transferred to the 1/4th Battalion of the regiment. Then on 11th April 1918, when the battalion felt the full impact of the Great German Spring Offensive, he was posted as 'missing ', it soon transpiring that he was actually a Prisoner of War.
Repatriated after the war (20th November 1918), he was demobilised on 25th February 1919.
Pte Hall was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal, receiving these on 9th January 1922.
In the 1939 National Register, shown below, he is living with his family at 119 Cross LAne, Prescot, and is employed at the Cable Works
He died in Prescot in 1971, aged 78
