34, Cross Street, Prescot Sgt 15, 5th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment Born in Prescot on 15th August 1868, Thomas was one of the first men to enlist on the new 5th Battalion when it was formed after the Territorial Army was restructured in April 1908. At the time, he was a 39 year old Die Maker at the Wire Works. He enlisted for a period of just one year, but then extended this each year until 1914.
He was married to Helen, and they had children Ethel, Ellen, Sidney, Thomas, Rosina and Florrie.
On the outbreak of war, he was embodied and then posted to the 49th Provisional Battalion in June 1915.
Thomas remained in the UK for the whole of the war years.
His time expired on 5th April 1916 but he reengaged for the duration of the war. He posted to the 14th Bn in January 1917 and was then renumbered to 265474 in March of that year.
Thomas was demobilised on 29th January 1919. As he had not served overseas, he did not have a medal entitlement.
The 1939 National register (below) recorded him still at the Cross Street address. By this time, he was retired.
He died in Prescot in 1940, aged 71
