16, Eaton Street, Prescot Private 21700, Coldstream Guards Leonard Waine was born around 1893 in Haydock, one of 13 children to John and Elizabeth Waine. The 1911 census listed the family at 6, Cook Street in Prescot, where nine of the children (including Leonard) lived with their parents.
Leonard had married Mary Mutch at Prescot Parish Church on 1st February 1913 and they had two daughters; Elsie (May 28th, 1913) and Beatrice (9th May 1915).
On 6th December 1915 in Prescot, Leonard Waine attested for 'the duration of the war' and was posted to the Army Reserve. On 14th February 1917, he was mobilised and posted to the Coldstream Guards at their depot in Caterham. He was listed as a 24 year old married man, employed at the Wire Works as a 'Copper Worker'. He stated that he had previously served for 4 years with the South Lancashire Regiment.
He spend a few months towards the end of 1917 serving with the Grenadier Guards but was posted back to the Coldstream Guards on 5th February 1918 when he was sent to France.
Leonard was wounded on 4th November 1918, suffering a Gun Shot Wound to the Hand. This resulted in him returning to the UK for treatment on 6th November.
He was posted to the Class Z Army Reserve in February 1919 and demobilised. He was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Leonard died in Prescot in 1969, aged 78.
