40, Market Place, Prescot Private 1177, Lancashire Yeomanry William signed for 4 years service with the Lancashire Yeomanry in Knowsley on 7th September 1914, aged 20, and was posted to the 1/1st Battalion on 20th March 1915. He went to France with his battalion on 9th November 1915.
He appears to have been slightly 'forgetful', and had three charges for 'Loss of Equipment' in December 1915 and January 1916.
In March 1916, he was attached to 24 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps and then on 17th June, was again attached to the Mounted Military Police.
However on 28th September 1917, he was transferred to the 18th Bn., King's (Liverpool) Regiment as part of a reorganisation which saw the whole Battalion transferred.
William was granted 12 days leave to the UK in February 1918, but at some point between 21st and 28th March 1918, he was posted as 'Missing'. This was at the time of the German Spring Offensive and it seems that he was 'lost' in the confusion of the time. He appears to have been posted back to duty on 16th April.
On 13th June 1918, William was transferred again, this time to the 6th Battalion, King's (Liverpool) Regiment, also being renumbered to 300217.
He was demobilised on 9th March 1919, giving his address as 36, Ackers Street, Prescot.
William was entitled to the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
