30, Church Street, Prescot Private 3005, 5th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment Matthew was born on 7t April 1886 in Prescot.
The 1911 census showed him working as General Labourer in the Drum Shed of the Wire Works. He was 24 and lived with his wife Mary, aged 21. They had been married for less than a year.
Mathew signed up for military service on 6th October 1914.He was appointed Lance Corporal on 28th February 1916 but then reverted to Private at his own request on 20th April 1917.
He was admitted to hospital at Aldershot on 18th September 1916 suffering from Appendicitis and remained there until 30th October, when he was discharged back to his unit.
On 14th February 1917 he went to France, returning to the UK for demobilisation on 14th December 1918. He was then demobilised on 12th January 1919.
Matthew was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
In 1939, the National Register (below) listed the family at 4 Garden Walk, Prescot. Matthew was a Labourer in the Wire Mill
He died in Prescot in the summer of 1942, aged 56
