13 Cook Street, Prescot

Private 1417 (later 341102), 3rd West Lancs Field Ambulance

Howell Lown was born in Prescot on 4th March 1895, the son of Stephen and Mary Lown. The 1911 census shoed that Stephen worked as a General Labourer at the Wire Works, while 16 year old Howell was an Apprentice Fitter, also at the Wire Works.

18 year old Howell was single when he attested for military service with the Territorials on 14th May 1913 at St Helens. His next of kin was listed as his father, Stephen, of the same address.

He was called up (embodied) on the outbreak of war in August 1914.

He was discharged, having completed his four years service, on 25th May 1917. He had not served overseas and had no medal entitlement. Later that year, he married Erica Davies and they had two sons, Arthur (1918) and Basil (1922).

Howell died in 1978 in Surrey.
