Also Served: Michael Aloysius Deane - Michael Aloysius DEANE
29a, High Street, Prescot Lieutenant, 4th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment Michael Aloysius Deane was born in 1881 in Hoddleston, just outside Darwen, Lancashire.
By the time of the 1901 census, he was living at 21a Kemble Street, Prescot and worked as a Schoolteacher. He was single, aged 20. He lived with his widowed mother, Annie (46), a native of Knotty Ash.
In 1908, he married Elizabeth Ellen Swift in Prescot.
The 1911 census showed that he had moved into the Swift family household at 29 High Street, Prescot with wife Elizabeth and their daughter Eileen, aged 1. Michael's occupation was recorded as "Assistant School Master (elementary)."
They went on to have three more daughters; Mildred (1911) , Annie (1913) and Ruth (1916)
In September 1914, shortly after the outbreak of the war, Michael attested for military service. It is possible that he initially joined the King's (Liverpool) Regiment as a Private, as this name was listed in the Prescot Reporter in May 1915, however it is possiblt that it was a dfifferent man of the same name. If he did join the King's, then he transferred to the South Lancashire Regiment before going overseas.
The London Gazette of 16th October 1917 listed his promotion from Officer Cadet to Second Lieutenant, and the 1918 Army List showed that he served with the 4th Battalion of the South Lancs. He went to France on 5th December 1917, and some time after that he was attached to the 4/5th Battalion of the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment.
London Gazette, 16th october 1917
The Liverpool Echo of September 10th 1918 (see below) reported that Lt Deane had been gassed and was in hospital in France.
Liverpool Echo, 10th September 1918
He was promoted to Lieutenant on 26th March 1919, by which time he had moved back to the South Lancashire Regiment.
London Gazette, 11th August 1919
His service entitled him to the British War Medal and Victory Medal, and he applied for these medals on 26th May 1922. His records show the High Street address and also that of St Michael's RC School, York Street, West Derby, Liverpool - presumably he went back to the school after the war.

He died aged 58, in Prescot in the summer of 1938.
