At the time of the 1911 census, 11 year old Ernest lived with his parents and siblings at the above address. He was the younger brother of Harry Fildes.
Attesting at St Helens on 28th October 1915, Ernest Fildes recorded that he was an Electrician. He was 19 years old (born 1896) and his mother, Elizabeth, was listed as his next of kin. He was posted to RE Base Depot in France, arriving there on 29th January 1917 and was assigned to 421st Field Coy. After a year in France, he was granted a week's leave in January 1918. In October 1918 he was appointed to Lance Corporal but reverted to Sapper a month later at his own request.
Around November and December 1918 he had a few spells in hospital, though the reason is not known.
Ernest was 'Mentioned in Dispatches', the particular dispatch being Sir Douglas Haig's dispatch of 16th March 1919, published in the London Gazette on 7th July 1919.
He was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal, receiving these in January 1922.
