Thomas signed on for four years service on the 9th November 1914 at Prescot. He had previously served for 8 years with the 2nd Battalion of the Shropshire Light Infantry. His next of kin was listed as his wife, Winifred.
He was appointed Lance Corporal on 18th August 1915 and then on 1st February 1917 he was transferred to Class W of the reserve. This classification meant that whilst still in the army, he was released for civilian work, usually war-related, but could be recalled at any time.
In Thomas' case, this meant that he was to work at Sutton Heath Colliery.
Early in April 1918, the recall took place as the Army responded to the call for reinforcements to combat the German Spring Offensive. He was posted to the 11th Battalion and went to France as part of a reinforcement draft on 6th October 1918.
Thomas was demobilised on 29th January 1919. His records also show that whilst in service, his address was changed to 2, Beaconsfield Street, Prescot.
He was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
