24, Sewell Street, Prescot Pioneer 129573, Royal Engineers William was born on 10th January 1881 in Prescot, the second son of John and Mary Chorley of Sewell Street.
On 25th April 1916, William appears to have joined the Royal Engineers 'in the field'. He was 35 years old, single and worked as a Coal Miner. His mother, Mary, was listed as his next of kin.
He had initially joined up in November 1915 at Chesterfield, serving as Private 22842 with the 12th Bn of the Scottish Rifles before his transfer to the Engineers.
William was gassed on 29th April 1917 and admitted to 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station, where he remained until 16th June. He was then moved to hospital in Bolougne and transferred to hospital in England on 8th September 1917. He was discharged from hospital in May 1918 and then back to duty. However he did not go back overseas, instead being released from service to work as a Coal Miner.
William was demobilised on 19th January 1919 at Chatham. He was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
The 1939 National register, below, listed William still living at 24 Sewell Street and employed as a Colliery Surface Worker
William died in Prescot in 1963, aged 82
