Born in Prescot around 1883, Arthur was listed in the 1911 census at the above address, also showing that the worked at the Wire Works as a Labourer (Copper Winding). He had been married to Margaret for 11 years and they had 6 children. Another two children were born, in 1912 and 1914.
Arthur was 33 years old when he joined the Royal Defence Corps on 9th September 1914 at St Helens. He had previously served for 8 years with the 2nd Battalion of the South Lancashire Regiment.
At some point in his training, Arthur broke the cartilage in his left knee in an accident at Lark Hill Camp on Salisbury Plain. This injury entitled him to a post war pension.
He remained in service for the full duration of the war, being demobilised on 1st February 1919, though he did not see overseas service and therefore had no medal entitlement.
