37, Sutherland Road, Prescot Pte 5422. 58th (Training Reserve) Bn., South Lancashire Regiment Joseph was born in Prescot on 20th April 1897.
He enlisted to the army on 2nd March 1917 at Prescot. He had worked as a Labourer at the Wire Works, and his notes record an accident there. 'On 20th January 1916, while following his occupation, he had an accident with his hand being caught in machinery, was immediately operated upon, with amputation of index and second fingers left hand, and was under medical treatment for 2 months.
After a further two weeks convalescence, he was able to resume his employment, after being on a lighter occupation for one month. He has been in the army for six months and has constantly reported sick, with bronchitis and pain in his left hand.
Being unable to use a rifle, Joseph was discharged on 3rd October 1917 at Shrewsbury as he was deemed to be no longer physically fit for war service. His character was classed as 'Sober and Steady'.
