Also Served: Thomas Valentine - Thomas VALENTINE
Chorley Villas, Warrington Road, Prescot Private 9578, 8th Bn., King’s (Liverpool) Regiment Thomas Valentine was born in Eccleston around 1893. He was the third child (eldest son) of Andrew and Priscilla Valentine. Andrew was the licencee of the Hare and Hounds in Prescot ('Tommy Hall's') and the family were living there at the time of the 1911 census, when Thomas was listed as an 18 year old College Student. He had attended Prescot Grammar School from 1901.
On 9th December 1915, Thomas enlisted to the King's (Liverpool) Regiment. He was 23 years old at the time and worked as an Industrial School teacher, living in Ashford, Kent. He was immediately posted to the Army Reserve and was not mobilised until 23rd February 1917.
In March of that year, he was renumbered to 359194. On 18th May he was appointed Lance Corporal but reverted to Private when he sailed for France on 5th September. On 9th September, he was posted to the 2/10th Bn of the regiment, based at Etaples.
After the Armistice, Thomas was again appointed Lance Corporal on 7th January 1919 remaining with this rank until he was demobilised. He was granted leave from 2nd to 22nd of May 1919 but appears not to have rejoined his unit as instructed and was treated as an 'Absentee'. However, it later transpired that he had actually been granted leave 'pending demobilisation', which took place on 12th December 1919.
Thomas was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal, receiving these on 11th May 1922.
