Prescot Pte 154576, 1st Pioneer Battalion, Canadian Infantry George Layhe was born on 4th July 1888 in Prescot, the eldest son of William and Catherine Layhe. He was baptised at St Mary's on 29th July
In 1891, the family lived in Bootle where William was employed as a Coachman. By 1901, however, the family had moved to the Brown Edge Inn in Nutgrove where William was now shown to be a 'Beerhouse Keeper'.
At some point after this, George migrated to Canada. He married Florence Anders on 12th October 1908 in Winnipeg,
In October 1915, George, aged 29, enlisted into the Canadian Expeditionary Force at Vancouver. He was employed as a 'Section Foreman' and gave his next of kin as his wife, Mrs Florence Layhe
No further details of George's service are known, although it is clear that he survived the war.
