5 Leyland St, Prescot Private 3752, 3rd/5th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment In St Helens on12th May 1915, William Lawrenson, aged 22, attested 'for the duration of the present war' to the South Lancs. His next of kin was his mother, Ellen, of 6, Salisbury Street, Prescot. William worked as a Telephone Wire Winder at the Cable Works.
He sailed for France from Southampton on 20th September 1915, arriving there the following day. In October 1915, he was suffering from influenza and was hospitalised, rejoining his unit on 21st November. On 7th October 1916, he was attached to the Town Major of Ypres for service, remaining there until rejoining the Battalion on 28th September 1917.
William was posted Missing on 30th November 1917, and it later transpired that he was taken Prisoner by the Germans, only being released on 25th December 1918. This was possibly the same action in which Harry Garrett Whitaker was captured.
William was discharged on 25th March 1919. He was entitled to the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal, receiving these in November 1921.
