William Lavelle, born in Eccleston in 1896, was the third of seven sons to Martin and Mary Lavelle. The 1911 census showed him to be single and employed as a General Labourer. He attested to the army on 20th May 1915 at St Helens. At that time, he was 19 years old
He went to France with his unit on 2nd October 1916. William was wounded on 22nd September 1917 in France and spent a week in hospital. His wound was recorded as a 'Mild' Gun Shot Wound to the right thigh. He rejoined his unit in November but then a year later, on 1st November 1918, he suffered a Gun Shot Wound to the right arm. Again admitted to hospital, he remained there until shortly after the armistice.
Demobilised on 10th February 1919, William was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory medal and received these in March 1922.
