36 Derby St, Prescot Gunner L/13816, 148 Bde, Royal Field Artillery Edmund was a 19 year old Miner when he attested for service at Liverpool on 20th April 1915. He was single and his mother, Alice, was his next of kin.
He left Southampton for Le Havre on 28th November 1915, arriving there the following day. On 1st October 1916 he was admitted to hospital at Rouen suffering from a minor Gun Shot Wound to the back, and was discharged a week later, convalescing with other units. He finally rejoined his unit on 11th February 1917.Edmund was granted 14 days leave to the UK in March 1918. Whilst on leave, he married Jane Chorley in Prescot.
He suffered from Laryngitis in October 1918 and then on 15th December, a month after the Armistice, he was sent back to the UK as he was a Miner and these men were amongst the earliest to be demobilised. At this time, he gave his address as The Swan Hotel, Prescot (this was No 36, Derby Street).
Edmund was entitled to the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Edmund and Jane had four children, Edie (1918), Edmund (1920), Albert (1922) and Olive (1924). Edmund died in Prescot in 1942, aged 45.
