10, Atherton Street, Prescot Private 1195, Lancashire Hussars Yeomanry Joseph attested to the Lancs Hussars yeomanry on 7th September 1914. He was included in the Prescot Reporter list oif men serving the colours in May 1915, and also the list of Roman Catholic men serving which was also published in the Reporter. He was 21 years old at attestation and worked as a Labourer . Joseph was single and gave his father, also Joseph, as his next of kin.
He was posted to the 1st/1st Battalion on 20th March 1915 and went to France with them on 9th November that year. He was in hospital suffering from influenza in November 1916 and then in February 1917 he was wounded, suffering wounds to the forehead and wrist.
He was then transferred to the 18th Bn, of the King's (Liverpool) Regiment on 23rd September 1917. His number with KLR appears to have been 300248
He was posted Missing at HAM on 28th March 1918 when the German's launched their final great offensive of the war, but later turned up as a Prisoner of War in Giessen, Germany. He was freed after the armistice on taken back on the strength of the Battalion on 4th December 1918. He was also found to be suffering from a Gun Shot Wound to the right arm.
Joseph was discharged in May 1919 and was entitled to the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
