At the time of the 1911 census, Walter lived with his parents at the above address. He was 14 and worked as a Van Lad for a Bread man. Also at the address were his sisters, Minnie and Lucy, and his brother Thomas.
He attested to the army, aged 18, on 28th March 1916 at St Helens. By this time, he recorded his occupation as Tool Maker. He was initially posted to the Depot Battalion of the King's (Liverpool) Battalion and then on 27th April 1916 he was posted to the 12th Bn of the King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment).
Walter went to France with his unit on 14th September 1916. About a fortnight later, close to Armentieres, he was caught up in a Gas attack. He was sent home for treatment on 19th October 1916, and was transferred to the 76th Bn of the Training Reserve Brigade.
He was then transferred to Class W Reserve on 5 February 1917 with Depot KLR for employment as Toolmaker with The Linotype & Machine Co, Altrincham, and was finally discharged due to his sickness on 31st July 1917.
Walter was entitled to the British War Medal, Victory Medal and Silver War Badge.
