11, Sewell Street, Prescot Pte 332, Lancashire Hussars Charles originally attested to the army as a Territorial at Rainhill on 12th March 1908, signing on for 4 years service.
The 1911 census showed that Charles was a native of Prescot. Aged 21 at the time of the census and living with his widowed mother at the above address, he was employed at the Cable Works as a Labourer.
After the completion of his 4 years service in 1912, he reengaged and was then fully embodied on the outbreak of war in August 1914. In September of that year he was promoted to Corporal, then on 8th December 1915 he was again promoted to Sergeant.
Sgt Keenan was listed in the Prescot Reporter list of Catholic men of the town who were serving with the Colours in May 1915.
He was discharged on 16th April 1916 having completed his term of engagement. He did not see any overseas service.
