Layton WELSBY

Ellaby Road, Rainhill

Private 42037, 6th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment

Born in Rainhill in 1885, Layton Welsby, a Quarryman, married Jane Dutton in 1907. They had two daughters, Edna and Olive, later also having Doris and Frank. The 1911 census also shows a 2 year old son, Frederick, but his name is crossed out, suggesting that he had died. Another son, Layton, was born in 1912.

Layton Welsby's service is not clear as his records have not survived. His service numb,er 42037, was probably issued sometime in 1917. He was entitled to the British War Medal alone. This shows that although he served overseas, he was not in a Theatre of War. This would have been the case of, for example, he had served in India.

As his service record has not survived, the only thing we know for certain is that he did not go overseas before 1916, as the date is not shown on the Medal Index Card.

Layton died in 1936 in Chorley, Lancashire.
