17 High Street, Prescot Pte 9131, 1st Bn., South Lancashire Regiment Peter Kelly was a regular soldier, joining the South Lancashire Regiment in 1898 for a period of 12 years, which comprised 7 years 'with the colours' followed by 5 years in the reserve. At the time, he was a 23 year old Labourer. Born on 16th June 1885 in Prescot, he was the eldest son of Patrick and Catherine Kelly, both of Irish origin.
Being based in the UK whilst he underwent training until 11th November 1909, he was then posted with the Battalion to India where he remained until December 1919, a little over 10 years. He was appointed as unpaid Lance Corporal in August 1910, then this was made into a paid role on 10th April 1912. He reverted to Private in 1913 as a result of misconduct, but ultimately became a Corporal in 1916 and then Sergeant on 1st December 1917.
Peter was included in the Reporter list of Roman Catholic men serving, which was produced in 1915.
His papers contain a medical report of him being in hospital for a trivial muscle issue in Quetta, India in April 1916.
Peter was involved in the third Afghan War of 1919 after which re remained with the army, being renumbered 3644443. He was finally discharged on completion of his 12 years service on 22nd November 1920.
He was brought to the notice of the Government of India in October 1920 for valuable service in relation to the minor military operations undertaken between May 1919 and April 1920 within the 'Indian Empire' (or in territories adjacent thereto) .
He was awarded the British War Medal, Victory Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with Afghanistan 1919 Clasp (London Gazette, 12th May 1920), and the Indian General Service Medal.
Peter died in Prescot in 1971, aged 76.
