10 Chester Street, Prescot Private 35610, Reserve Bn., Lancashire Fusiliers Born in Prescot in 1899, William was the youngest of 7 children to William and Hannah Mutch of Chester Street, Prescot.
William was recorded as a 17 year old Painter when he attested for military service in Warrington on 4th May 1916. Initially posted to the Reserve, he was transferred to the 2nd Bn in August 1916.
In April 1917, he was treated in hospital in Orpington for an abscess to his groin, after which he was granted 10 days leave from 1st to 11th May. His records are unclear but it seems that he went back to his battalion in July 1917, after which he was appointed to the unpaid rank of Lance Corporal on 23rd May 1918. He later joined the 11th Battalion at Etaples on 25th July 1918 but was shortly posted back to the 1/5th Bn..
In September 1918, he was treated for a Gun Shot Wound to the hand.
William was discharged on 21st December 1918 at Heaton Park. He was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
