Thomas was born in Prescot in 1892, the eldest son of John and Ellen. He was baptised at St Marys by the Revd. Mitchell on 17th April 1892.
The 1911 census had him listed as a 19 year old University Student, and when he attested to the Honourable Artillery Company on 9th December 1915, he was 23 years old and worked as an Assistant Schoolmaster. His address was given as Inglewood House, Penrith, though he recorded his father John at 20 Warrington Road, Prescot, as his next of kin.
He appears not to have served overseas, with his service showing as 'Home' from 10th April 1916 to 8th April 1917, then 'P. T. Reserve' until 25th July 1917, when he was discharged as he was deemed to be no longer physically fit for service.
Thomas' medical records show that he suffered from influenza in October/November 1916, spending 24 days in hospital. But he was then taken back to hospital on 5th December 1916, this time remaining there until 1st March 1917. This illness appears to have led to his discharge.
His picture (above) appeared in the Prescot Reporter n late 1916, and reported that he had guarded a fallen German Zeppelin at Potters Bar.
Thomas died in Prescot in 1984, aged 92.
