20 Warrington Road, Prescot Pte 3381 (later 241188), 2/5th Bn, South Lancashire Regiment Albert was born in Prescot on 6th June 1897, the third of five sons to John and Ellen Leadbetter. The 1911 census showed him to be a 13 year old Errand Boy.
Albert attested to the Territorials for 4 years in March 1914 in Prescot, giving his father, John, as his next of kin. He was fully embodied on 9th November 1914 and appointed to the rank of Lance Corporal in September 1915.
His name was included in the Reporter list of men serving which was published in May 1915.
He became a full Corporal in early 1917, coinciding with his posting to France (17th February 1917) but was back in England in early January 1918 where he remained for the remainder of the war. He became a Lance Sergeant on 3rd December 1918.
It seems that he suffered from the flu in December 1918, being hospitalised for two weeks before returning to duty.
Albert was demobilised on 25th March 1919. His medal entitlement was to the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
He died in Prescot in 1980, aged 83.
