William Finney originally attested to the South Lancs Regiment for four years on 9th April 1908, aged 19. He was single and was employed as a Gardner by Captain A F Evans of Fazackerly House.
He attended annual training camp from 1908 to 1913 but was then embodied on the outbreak of war and on 5th August 1914 was appointed to the rank of Corporal, reverting to Rifleman on 13th March 1915 until he left the army on 10th April 1916 on the completion of his engagement.
William was included in the Reporter list of men serving, produced in May 1915, the list of Roman Catholic men serving, which was produced in the Reporter in 1915, and also the Bible Class list of men serving, produced in the Parish Magazine.
He served in France from 12th February 1915 to 10th April 1916, suffering a sprained ankle in May 1915, this requiring hospital treatment.

His medal entitlement was to the 1915 Star, Victory Medal and British War Medal.
