1, Mill Cottages, Prescot Pte 545, 5th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment Charles Coppack originally attested to the 5th Bn of the South Lancashire Regiment on 7th April 1908 in Prescot. At that time, he was 25 years old and worked for British Insulated & Helsby Cables Ltd as a Wireman and lived at 88, East View, Prescot. He was a native of Ellesmere Port and originally recorded his father, George, of Ellesmere Port as his next of kin.
The 1911 census showed him to be living as a Boarder at 88, Warrington Road, Prescot, the home of William and Martha Mercer. He was 28, single and was employed as an Electrical Engineer's Assistant Fitter.
Charles had married Rosina Price in Chorlton in 1912 and his record was updated to show that his next of kin was now Rosina Coppack of 1, Mill Cottages, Prescot.
Having signed on for a period of seven years, he attended annual camp every year.
When war broke out in August 1914, Charles was initially promoted to Lance Sergeant on 5th August, then promoted to full Sergeant on 9th September of that year.
He sailed for France with the Battalion on 11th February 1915. He was then promoted to Colour Sergeant on 8th May 1915. He reverted, at his own request, to Sergeant on 3rd September 1915.
Having completed his period of engagement, Charles returned to England on 2nd April 1916 and was discharged from the army on 4th April 1916. He had served 7 years and 363 days.
His medal entitlement was to the 1914 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Charles died in Cheshire in 1968, aged 85
