10, Chester Street, Prescot Private 42317, South Lancashire Regiment Herbert attested to the Territorial Force for four years service in February 1909, aged 17, recording that he worked as a Labourer at the Wire Works.
The 1911 census shows Herbert living at the above address with his parents, William and Hannah, and six siblings, including Walter who is also recorded on this site. He was employed as a Cable Winder at the Wire Works.
He attended annual training camp for the prescribed four years then left the service on 23rd February 1913 having completed his engagement.
Herbert attested for service on 6th December 1915. He served overseas although no details of his service have been located. He was discharged with a Silver War Badge on 11th July 1919, aged 26.
His medal entitlement was to the British War Medal and Victory Medal. He died in Prescot in 1967, aged 74.
