Woodbine Cottage, Prescot Private 240735, 2nd/5th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment Born in Prescot on 13th November 1896, Owen was listed in the Prescot reporter in 1915 as one of the local men serving with the colours. He was also listed in the Parish Magazine as one of the men of the Bible Class who was serving. Owen was the brother of Albert Horsfall Whitaker, James Whitaker and George Vince Whitaker and I believe that he was a first cousin of Harry Garrett Whitaker, whose narrative can be found here.
He attended Prescot Grammar School between 1909 and 1912. The 1911 census shows Owen, aged 14, as a Scholar living with his parents James (A Nurseryman) and Annie, and his 4 brothers and 3 sisters.
At the age of 19 in September 1916, he enlisted into the South Lancashire Regiment, recording his occupation as a Solicitors Clerk.
No details of owen's service have been located, but he was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
After the war, Owen married Ellen Seddon in Prescot in 1928, and they had three daughters, Ruth, Helen and Margery.

Owen died in Knowsley in 1978 at the age of 82.
