Dale House, Roby Private 1915, 1/5th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment (Later 240317) Thomas was the son of Henry and Ellen Tushingham of Whiston, owners of the local Brickworks. The 1911 census showed the family living at Coalgate Lane in Whiston. Thomas was a 14 year old Scholar at that time.
He attended the Grammar School from 1906 onwards and was included in the list of Grammar School Old Boys serving the colours which was published in the Parish Magazine on 25th August 1915. He had attested for military service on 19th March 1914, aged 17, joining the Territorial Battalion of the South Lancs. He recorded that he worked as a Fitter at the Wire Works.
On the outbreak of war in August 1914, he was embodied at Prescot. He appears to have remained in the UK until 18th July 1915, when he was disembodied, although the reason for this is not clear.
Thomas was finally discharged from the army in January 1919, at which time he gave an address in Coventry as his home. Ref. No.:
