Harold LEYLAND

1 Aspinall Street, Prescot

Private Se/27075, Army Veterinary Corps

Born in Prescot in 1880, Anthony Leyland attended Prescot Grammar School from 1889.

In the 1901 census, the Leyland family lived at 2, Aspinall Street where Thomas, head of the household, worked as a Veterinary Surgeon. His 21 year old son, Anthony, worked for him. Interestingly, by the time of the 1911 census, the family lived at 1, Aspinall Street, over the road from their 1901 address, with both Thomas (now widowed) and his son Anthony working as Vets. Anthony was by now using his middle name of Harold.

He was listed in the Parish Magazine list of former pupils serving with the colours on 28th August, 1915 under the heading 'Other Regiments'.

His Medal Index Card lists his service with the Army Veterinary Corps, with whom he earned the British War medal and Victory Medal.

Nothing further has yet been identified about Harold's wartime service. After the war, he returned to Prescot and married Mabel Stone in 1923.

Harold's entry in the 1924 Kelly's Directory of Prescot

He died in Prescot in 1958, aged 78.
